Your Business Internet & Phone Expenses Can Be Forgiven With The Paycheck Protection Program

A letter to my fellow business colleagues and clients,

As a small business owner myself, I have been impacted greatly by the COVID-19 pandemic just like many of you. Being an advisor to hundreds of businesses for their business phone and internet services, I have taken a proactive approach to learning about how we can work through the government programs that are offered to keep our staff in place and keep our business running at some level of normalcy. In doing so, I have found a very interesting detail within the Paycheck Protection Program (“PPP”), under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (“CARES Act”) that I would like to share with you.

 

What Can the Loan Proceeds be Used For?

The loan proceeds can be used for more overhead expenses than what went into calculating the amount of the loan, including:

  • Payroll costs (see sba.gov for details)
  • Interest (not principal) payments on mortgages
  • Rent
  • Utilities
  • Interest (not principal) on any debts that were incurred before February 15, 2020

 

According to the CARES Act, your phone & internet expenses can be up to 100% forgivable:

The Paycheck Protection Program is designed to provide a direct incentive for small businesses to keep their workers on payroll by providing each small business a loan up to $10 million for payroll and certain other expenses. 

If all employees are kept on payroll for eight weeks, SBA will forgive the portion of the loans used for payroll, rent, mortgage interest, or utilities. Up to 100 percent of the loan is forgivable. (reference)

 

What does this mean for you as a business owner?

When a loan is taken out with the PPP, the money that is used to pay for your business related utilities are eligible for up to 100 percent forgiveness. These utilities include telecommunication services such as your phone and internet services.

In short, those expenses related to your business phone and internet services can be considered a free grant as one of the items in your forgiveness application form.

 

How Can I Take Advantage of This Benefit?

Phone Systems – If you already have a phone system in place that is capable of remote operations (things like call forwarding, mobile phone integrations, internet based calling, team paging, etc.), nothing needs to be done. If you don’t have those systems already or think you’re paying too much, now is the time to take advantage of a powerful phone system with no financial impact. Oftentimes, these services are similar in price (or cheaper!) than your current business phone services.

Internet Services – Business internet services are very different from your home services. With that, the speeds, bandwidth, and security features may lack. Furthermore, the cost is usually higher in a business setting. We are here to help you with two things. 1) Save money, and 2) make sure you stay connected without any business interruption.
